18th Amendment
- The 18th Amendment of the United States Constitution prohibited alcoholic beverages in the US
- Not only was drinking it illegal, but production, transport, and sale of alcohol were illegal too
- The president at the time was Woodrow Wilson, who vetoed the bill. However, his veto was overridden by the House of Representatives and the Senate, and the law was passed
- The rule didn't go into effect until January 17, 1920, when the Volstead Act went into effect
- At the time, this was considered a progressive amendment
EFFECTS:
- The amendment had little affect and was loosely enforced
- Led to more promiscuity and partying among young adults
- The amendment was in effect for 13 years before being repealed by the ratification of the 21st Amendment in 1933
